FACE OF THE DAY

As before, here’s the FOTD that goes with my most recent OOTD!

Holy eyebags. Batman! Should have tried harder with the concealer, I guess. Oh, well. Did manage to kill the raging hormonal explosion on my cheek, so it might have been worse! Back to my beloved Naked 3 for the eyes here, but I am trying out something new with the foundation. I’m looking for something different at the moment, and in the running are Dior Skin Star, Estee Lauder Double Wear, and MUFE HD foundation. The trouble is, I’m both pale and yellow/neutral toned. Getting foundation to match this shade is, as I’ve mentioned before, nothing short of nightmarish. Consequently, I’m hoping to get to trial a few before ultimately making a decision. The lovely Anna at the Dior counter in House of Fraser in Dundrum was kind enough to give me a trial pot of both #10 (light pink-toned) and #11 (light yellow-toned) to use at home to see how it worked out for me.

I’m wearing #11 here, and I think it worked out okay! I am LOVING this foundation. I’m not 100% sure on the shade (I will want to try out the #10 first for comparison), but the foundation itself is lovely. It’s very, very buildable (I only did a light and sheer application here) and not heavy or smothering at all. Compared to the Urban Decay Naked Skin I usually use, this oddly feels far more… Naked. Despite this, it gives pretty excellent coverage. (Although as you can tell from the picture above, you might want to apply a concealer in the eye area with it too, or at least more than one light layer if you have persistent dark circles.) The only complaint I had was that oddly, at the end of the day, I had mascara smears under my eyes. That usually never happens with this mascara, and I’m wondering if I just didn’t give it enough time to dry (I was in a bit of a rush this morning) or if there’s something about this foundation that encourages mascara to smear? More testing definitely required– perhaps if I try it with a powder…

Here’s what else I was wearing:

FACE OF THE DAY

As before, here’s the FOTD that goes with my most recent OOTD!

I’m breaking into my Naked 2 for the first time here. Oh, how I love the Naked palettes– let me count the ways…! One, two, three… Three and a half (Naked On The Run). Here’s what else I’m using:

I’m happy enough how this turned out, even if it’s not quite perfect because there were many points where it tried to go horribly, horribly wrong. Firstly, my skin is throwing a minor wobbly right now. That’s all right; I just pasted on the concealer(s) and then foundation. Job done, sort of. Then my eye makeup went wrong. Twice. First, I messed up my eyelining, which had to be corrected. Not so big a deal, though you can still see where some mascara has made the liner darker looking on one eye, alas.

Then, inexplicably, I managed to smear mascara over both my eyelids and also ALL OVER MY FACE. In trying to fix the escaped mascara on my eye, I got it on my hands, and then got it on my cheeks, and then my nose… Cleaning that mess up took a while, as you can imagine, which is why the above photo is a bit rushed– by this point, I was running very short on time!

I do like how the eyes turned out despite all the problems, though. Naked 2 is every bit as brilliant as I was hoping it would be… So long as you don’t make a mess of yourself while using it, anyway.

What new additions to your makeup collection are you loving right now? What do you wish you’d tried earlier? How often do you make an utter mess of your face in the mornings (please say frequently, so I don’t feel so useless and alone)? Drop me a line and let me know!

FACE OF THE DAY

The other day, I posted up my OOTD, but thought it might be fun to do a separate FOTD post for the makeup I had on at the time, because it actually turned out pretty well!

My skin is actually not acting up terribly at the moment, so I was able to get away with a little bit of primer and some concealer, applied very gently with my (freshly washed!) fingertips. I’d intended to have the focus on the lips, but the eyes turned out more intense than I’d intended, so instead of going overboard on the lips, I skipped the lipstick I was intending to use and went with gloss-only for a lighter look.

In addition to the products above, I used a selection of brushes for this, a mix of Real Techniques, Jemma Kidd, and Catrice:

fotd5-brushes

Brush #1 is used for blusher, obviously, and despite the fact that I only used two shades on my eyes, I did use the other five brushes on those!

I used the Real Techniques “Deluxe Crease Brush” (#2) to apply Virgin as a base all over the lid and right up to the brow bone. This is a great brush because it’s huge and really soft, so it can do either blending or base application in a jiffy. That done, I then took #4 (the Jemma Kidd pencil brush) to apply Gunmetal to the crease, and blended it out with #3, the Real Techniques Duo Fibre Eye Brush. This brush is surprisingly useful; it doesn’t pick up a lot of product, so if you’ve blended too much, you can easily use it to add a little more colour to your look without having to worry about overdoing it in one stroke.

Then I took #6 (which is from Catrice and is actually a lip brush), dipped the pointy end in the Gunmetal, and applied it very gently along the lower lid, just outside the lash line. The tip of this brush is so fine that you can easily nudge individual lashes out of the way and get a really super precise line– almost like an eyeliner, but much softer. I then did the same on the upper lashes, and blended both out with #5, the Real Techniques Accent Brush.

I finished by curling my eyelashes, applying the mascara, and then letting my lashes dry before curling a second time. While they were drying, I filled in my brows with the Eylure powder, applied a light slick of the Charlotte Tilbury gloss to my lips, and added gentle sweep of the blush to finish up my look. I then gave my lashes another go of the curler just for extra hold (which lasted more or less all day). Overall, I was quite happy with how it worked out!

What products are you loving right now? Which brushes are your go-to godsends? What colours see the most use from your shadow palettes? Drop me a line and let me know!

CHRISTMAS HAS COME AND GONE :(

Gosh, for someone who did so much bitching about Christmas coming, I feel surprisingly saddened about it being over! I actually had a really lovely, really quiet Christmas. I stayed home with mum, made dinner, and then watched three solid hours of soap nonsense on telly. All in all,  a good day…! My Christmas tree looks all sad and bare without its cache of pressies underneath, but I am so delighted by my gifts that I couldn’t possibly feel too badly about it. Here’s what I got:

christmaspresents

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Blu-Ray

Elektra Blu-Ray
GAP Fingerless gloves
Hermes scarf

Not pictured: Navy UGG boots (yay!) and Paul Costello faux fur throw pillows and blanket. The latter was a surprise, and boy was I surprised! They’re so cozy and soft, though, so I might try to take photos of them– they make snuggling up on the couch extra comfy in these chilly times. (It will surprise nobody to say you’ll be seeing the UGGs regularly in upcoming OOTDs. Love UGGS. Love them.)

I should probably have asked for exercise gear, though– I’m going to have to be rolled out of the house come new year! Mum did most of the cooking (apart from my special potatoes) but I was in charge of setting the table, so I had a little fun coming up with something pretty and different:

tablesetting

The lights are old champagne bottles filled with battery-operated fairy lights, if you’re wondering. Super easy to do, and looks really interesting! The same lights are also draped over the floor lamp in the corner– I think I might keep those there year-round, actually; they’re really very fun.

Of course, no amount of cute table decoration is going to take away from Mum’s dinners:

christmasdinner

If you’re thinking it’s basically the same as my birthday dinner except with brussel sprouts and garlic potato, you’d be right. Roast lamb is definitely my favourite dinner…! I’m just not that into turkey.

Or Christmas pudding, for that matter; for me, it wouldn’t be Christmas without cake:

christmascake

We got white chocolate curls this time, and little fruit pieces, for some reason. Not complaining! They’re delicious. Definitely going to this bakery again; it’s aces.

I had such a lovely time this year that hopefully it will motivate me to not be such a Grinch in the run up to Christmas 2015. I just have to do what I did this year: get all my business done well and early so that the last couple of days before Christmas aren’t spent in frantic terror… And which, mostly importantly, will allow me to avoid all car parks for at least ten days before Christmas Day. (I’m pretty sure being able to do that was critical to my enjoyment of the festive season this year. Trying to find a space in a jam-packed car-park is my idea of hell; avoiding it definitely allows me to enhance my calm.)

Did you have a great Christmas? Are you gunning for the sales? Do you have any fun stories or tales of Christmas terror to share? Drop me a line and let me know… But I hope all your dinners went off beautifully, all your presents were delivered on time, and the day was everything you dreamed of.

PRODUCT EXPERIENCE: KIEHL’S SKIN BLUR

One of the more recent additions to the Kiehl’s lineup (at least in Ireland) is the Micro-Blur Skin Perfector:

skinblur1

Halfway between skincare and primer, this product straddles a line that as a general rule is probably best left unmounted… But in this case, I might make an exception. Like a primer, this goes on after moisturiser and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth, giving a nice base for makeup. Here comes the science bit– concentrate! (Or skip it, if mentions of chemicals make your eyes glaze over, which I realise is most people’s natural inclination.)

This has a priming effect because it’s got silicone (Dimethicone, among others) and silicas (Silica Silyate, and possibly others as well; I can’t decipher all the ingredients on the box!) in it, which are generally used to give a nice smoothing effect for fine lines.  Unlike most primers, though, this also has skincare ingredients, too: Salicylic Acid,  Lipo Hydroxy Acid, and Lentil Seed Extract, which are supposed to improve the quality of skin over time, tightening and shrinking pores both on application and in the long term.

So, does it work? Well, as a skincare product, it might be too soon to tell. Initial application yielded minimal results visually, as you can see below:

skinblur2

Skin-Blur applied on the thumb half of the hand, and not on the upper half. It doesn’t really make a very visible impact, does it? That said, the skin definitely feels softer and smoother, and I have no doubt that it makes make-up grip better, too. It also reduces shine, so I’ll probably be trying this out over the next couple of days to see if I can use it as a foundation-replacemet base (as I don’t really wear foundation that much) and see what I think.

Have you tried this product out? Do you feel it lives up to its claims? Are you a Kiehl’s fan in general? Drop me a line and let me know!

INSIDE MY MAKEUP DRAWER #1

In my previous post Inside My Makeup Drawer, I promised a breakdown of my different little cases of makeup and the various bits and pieces therein. Today:

IMMD-01a

Lip Balms & Creams

 3 x Zovirax
1 x Viraleif
1 x Carmex
1 x Forever Living Aloe Lips
1 x Kiehl’s Lip Balm (Unflavoured)
1 x Kiehl’s Lip Balm (Coconut)
1 x Kiehl’s Lip Balm (Vanilla)
1 x Kiehl’s Lip Balm (Mint)

As you can probably tell, I’m pretty serious about my lip care! I hate having dry, chapped lips, and I believe prevention is better than cure, so I make sure I always have a coldsore blocker to hand.

Not pictured: my five other tubes of Carmex (scattered through my various bags) and my Creme De La Mer lipbalm (which lives in the basket of notebooks and pens underneath my living room table.)

Do you swear by any of the above? What lip balms and creams do you use?  Drop me a line and let me know!

PRODUCTS I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT #1

Now that I’ve been home a few days, I’ve finally recovered from my weekend away (will be posting about that tomorrow). My skin is beginning to recover, too– all that swimming and champagne took its toll, and the stress of getting ready to go beforehand didn’t help, either. Since I’ve been home, I’ve turned to one of my favourite repair products to perk my skin back up again, and it’s definitely doing its job.

Putting my thoughts on this product behind a cut, since I have quite a lot of opinions about this one! Continue reading
